About Japanese Last Names

Preserving the rich cultural heritage and meanings behind Japanese surnames for future generations

Our Story

Founded in 2018, Japanese Last Names began as a passion project by cultural anthropologist Dr. Kenji Tanaka and linguist Maria Rodriguez. What started as a simple database of common Japanese surnames has evolved into the world’s most comprehensive resource for Japanese family name research and education.

Our journey began when Dr. Tanaka, while researching his own family history, discovered how little accessible information existed about the meanings and origins of Japanese surnames outside academic circles. Together with Maria, who specialized in East Asian linguistics, they set out to create a resource that would make this fascinating aspect of Japanese culture accessible to everyone.

Our Growth Journey

Launched with 500 carefully researched Japanese surnames and their meanings. Our initial focus was on the most common names and their geographical distributions.

2019

Expanded our database to include rare and regional surnames. Added pronunciation guides and cultural context for each name.

2020

Launched our name generator tool and interactive search features. Partnered with universities in Japan for academic research.
